The Three Areas SME Leaders Must Focus on in 2026.

By Patrick Maloney. January 2026

When leaders ask me where to focus their energy this year, my answer is simple, but not easy.

  1. Strategy: From Wishful Thinking to Clear Direction.

Hope is not a strategy.

Too many businesses are running on plans that were built for a different market, a different size, or a different reality. In 2026, your strategy must be:

  • Clear enough that your team understands it
  • Practical enough that it can actually be executed
  • Flexible enough to adapt when (not if) things change

This is the year to pressure-test your assumptions, face the uncomfortable truths and decide what you won’t do, as much as what you will.

  1. Talent: Capability, Capacity and Leadership.

Growth doesn’t stall because of ambition, it stalls because of people misalignment.

Ask yourself:

  • Do your leaders truly have the capability to lead through uncertainty?
  • Do your teams have the capacity, or are they already stretched to breaking point?
  • Are you tolerating roles, behaviours or structures that no longer serve the business?

Getting talent right isn’t just about hiring. It’s about clarity, accountability and developing leaders who can think, not just do.

  1. Brand: Relevance, Not Reinvention.

Your brand isn’t just your logo or website, it’s how clearly the market understands you.

In uncertain times, buyers gravitate towards businesses that feel confident, credible and consistent.

If your brand message is muddled, outdated or trying to be everything to everyone, growth becomes harder work than it needs to be.

This is about sharpening your proposition, not starting from scratch.

How Do You Get the Ball Rolling?

The most important thing you can do in January is take action.

That might mean:

  • Finally tackling the strategic conversations you’ve been avoiding
  • Making a tough decision you’ve been putting off
  • Or finally admitting that you don’t have all the answers, and asking for help

The very best business leaders I work with are not afraid to surround themselves with experts. They see it for what it is: a smart, commercial decision.

Trying to navigate complexity alone is rarely a badge of honour, it’s often a growth blocker.

A Final Thought..

If 2026 is going to be a defining year for your business, then January is where the tone is set.

Reflect. Reset. But then move. Because clarity creates confidence, and confidence drives growth.
