Influencing Through Voice

  • Blog

Penny Bramwell-Jones, our Communication Impact Specialist, has some fascinating insights to share on the topic of Influencing through Voice.

This insight is built upon 16 years in leadership development; facilitating, training, mentoring and coaching groups or individuals to speak with influence in both the UK and Internationally.

Did you know that when we communicate with other people:

  • 55% of the message they receive is non-verbal
  • 38% relate to the tone of voice they hear
  • Only 7% connect with the actual words they hear

The fact that only 7% connect with the words surprises many people as they often think they make up most of the communication. In reality, it’s the visible gestures we show that communicate most of the message as this is where most people’s perceptions are formed – from what they can see.

Albert Mehrabian suggested that, even with the absence of tone of voice and words, the body language we demonstrate will still communicate a message to others.

In summary, think about how you use your body language and your voice when you communicate, and then make it count!
