If you think you don’t need a mentor….you probably need a mentor.

There’s a myth in leadership that once you’re “senior enough”, you should have it all figured out.

You’re the MD. The founder. The director. The one everyone looks to.

So you should be confident. Certain. Unshakeable. But here’s the truth…

The more senior you become, the harder it gets to find a space to think out loud.
And the higher up you are, the higher the stakes. Decisions cost more. People watch more closely. Mistakes travel faster.

That’s why the best leaders don’t just lead. They pressure-test their thinking.

Mentoring isn’t a weakness, it’s leadership hygiene

Let’s say this clearly:

Getting an outside perspective doesn’t mean you can’t do the job.

It means you’re taking the job seriously. Because leadership isn’t about knowing everything.

It’s about making good calls, consistently, when the pressure is on and the information is incomplete.

And if we’re honest, that’s most days.

What changes as you become more senior?

At the beginning of your career, leadership is about doing. As you progress, leadership becomes about deciding.

  • What to prioritise
  • What to drop
  • Who to trust
  • What direction to take
  • How to respond to uncertainty
  • What not to do

Senior leadership is judgement.

And judgement improves with perspective.

The problem: you’re too close to it.

If you’re running a business, you’re deep in it every day. Deadlines. People. Clients. Cashflow. Expectations. Energy. Firefighting.

So even great leaders can fall into:

• reacting instead of leading
• repeating patterns
• sticking with what worked in the past
• making fast decisions without exploring all options
• carrying the weight alone

Not because they’re not capable. Because they’re human. And they’re busy. And they’re in it. That’s where mentoring comes in.

A mentor isn’t there to “fix you”.

Mentoring at this level isn’t about hand-holding.

It’s not therapy. It’s not rescue. It’s not “help”.

It’s a confidential sounding board where you can:

• challenge your own assumptions
• see blind spots
• explore options before acting
• make sharper decisions
• navigate complexity
• lead with clarity

Think of it like this…

Mentoring gives you altitude.

When you’re on the ground, everything feels urgent. From 30,000 feet, you can finally see what matters.

The most successful leaders do this.

High-performing leaders don’t wait for a crisis. They invest early. They build decision quality.

They sharpen their thinking. They keep themselves accountable.

They don’t confuse independence with isolation.

And they don’t pretend leadership is meant to be done alone.

The question isn’t “Do I need mentoring?”

The question is:

“Do I want to make better decisions this year than I did last year?”

Because if you’re leading a business in 2026, the market will do what it does. Uncertainty. Pressure. Curveballs. But your leadership? That’s the one lever you can control.

And the strongest leaders are the ones who never stop developing.

If you’re a business owner or senior leader who would value an external sounding board, to pressure-test thinking, explore options and lead with more clarity, drop me a message.
