Team Development – Tuckman’s Five Stage Theory

Team Development and How to Lead a Team to peak performance!

Every team goes through a process where they get to know each other. Where they are exploring ways of working together after a period of adjustment. After that they move on to setting up their ideal ways of working together before finally reaching their final destination … full potential.
As a leader, facilitating team development effectively means, not only understanding the various stages of team development and identifying where your team is at within the process, but also taking practical steps to help your team progress to that next stage efficiently.
In this blog, David Davies, Lead Talent’s Leadership Development expert, presents not only the five stages of team development, but also explores some ways you can move your team through each stage productively by offering a breakdown of what to expect at each stage (plus some key actions you should be taking as a leader to support the development process).

Tuckman’s Team Dynamic Theory:

STEP 1: FORMING:
The team gets to know one another and starts to
establish working patterns.
• Help a team get to know each other
• Build relationships
• Clarify team purpose
• Set individual roles and expectation

STEP 2: STORMING
Interpersonal conflicts can arise as the team
grows accustomed to how everyone works.
• Improve team communication
• Articulate team and individual needs
• Agree on how to handle conflict productive

STEP 3: NORMING
The team begins to settle into a productive
workflow and normality is established.
• Build team spirit
• Give the group room to grow
• Surface and analyse problems effectively

STEP 4: PERFORMING
Conflicts have been resolved, processes are in
place, and the team is working at peak
performance.
• Capture and document learning points
• Continue to build team spirit (yes, still!)
• Encourage proactivity and autonomy

STEP 5: ADJOURNING
The project or team comes to a close and the
group is disbanded or repurposed.
• Reflect and collect learnings
• Celebrate one another
